creativity
an interesting story I heard from Rabbi Sacks
Andrei Gregory the great actor and playwright melted at a certain point in his life. He explained that it all came down to one incident. He was walking down the street and saw a master who was at the peak of his career, crying. Andrei approached the artist and asked him, “Master why are you crying?”
The artist replied to him; “Because I live creatively in my art, but never in my life”.

What do you think that means?
ReplyDeleteMatt,
ReplyDeleteDavid Wallace would define living creatively as getting out of one's own default setting.
Rabbi Sacks would describe it as breaking out of routine. In essence it is one idea.
People live most their lives enslaved in the values of society and in self centered thinking.
Sometimes, they have one area (their profession) in which they are rational, consider their purpose (in that field) and consequences. A mathematician does these things daily. So do many other people of different professions. But like the master in the story, they do not approach life as a field of study and do not apply those same methods to their whole lives. This truth has finally hit the master and it's very real to him.
